How to Shop Sustainably for the Holiday Season

The holidays are a time of joy, giving, and togetherness, but they can also lead to significant environmental impact.

With a little thoughtfulness, you can make your holiday shopping more sustainable while still giving meaningful gifts. Here are 5 tips to celebrate the season with care for the planet:

 1. SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISANS + SMALL BUSINESSES

Shopping small keeps money in your community and supports creators who prioritize sustainable practices. Visit local markets, craft shows or browse small business websites for unique, one of a kind gifts. By supporting local, you not only contribute to the local economy but also reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping products over long distances.

 2. GIVE GIFTS THAT ENCOURAGE SUSTAINABILITY

Encourage sustainability by selecting gifts that can be used multiple times. Reusable items like stainless steel water bottles, glass containers, or beeswax wraps help reduce waste and promote a greener lifestyle. Opt for gifts made from eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, or recycled materials. These materials have a lower impact on the environment compared to traditional materials like plastic or non-recycled paper.

Our products are packaged in compostable and/or recyclable packaging that can even be reused many times over! Our salves make a lovely gift, with packaging that can be repurposed as well. Our CLAY MASK gift set is a lovely option for a multipurpose gift - the bamboo spoon + dish can be used many different ways! Did we mention, all of the gift wrapping is 100% compostable??

 3. MINIMIZE WRAPPING WASTE

Opt for gifts with minimal or eco-friendly packaging. Wrap presents in reusable fabric, kraft paper, or even old newspapers. Reuse tissue paper + gift bags that you have previously received to give them a second life. Have little ones? Let them colour on some paper to add a sweet, personalized touch. Avoid using single-use wrapping paper that contributes to unnecessary waste. Did you know... traditional wrapping paper can not be recycled because it is made from mixed materials?

Our “naked soaps” come without packaging, making them a perfect choice for the eco-conscious shopper. Compostable skincare products like our LIP BUTTER DUO gift set make great stocking stuffers as well! Not only is the wrapping compostable, but so are the lip butter tubes themselves!

 4. GIFT EXPERIENCES OVER ITEMS

Experiential gifts create lasting memories without adding to the clutter of material possessions. Looking for a way to gift outside the box? Consider experiences like a workshop, spa treatment, or donating to a cause. How about a night out to one of your favourite local restaurants? Feeling crafty? Host a DIY gift-making night with your friends + family!

 5. PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID LAST MINUTE PURCHASES

Rushed, last-minute shopping often leads to impulse buys + unsustainable choices. Make a list, plan your purchases and shop early to reduce stress + stay mindful. A well-thought-out plan is like a superpower against stress and impulse buys! An easy way to stay on top of purchases is by creating a list in your phone where you can keep track of what you bought + who the gift is for.

I have fabric bags that I reuse every year to wrap gifts in. There is no garbage this way and also saves money!
